Six mornings in a row now. Skip finishing the video, just open the camera and record one unscripted take, even a bad one.

Take

  • Caterpillar led the day's drop at -5.8% on a $378B market cap, the single biggest move on the board, and dragged Deere, Parker Hannifin, Howmet and Cummins down with it. Yahoo's own coverage called the move overdone relative to fundamentals, with no company-specific news behind it.
  • REITs sold off together too (Welltower, Simon Property, Mid-America Apartment, Invitation Homes, Ventas), the kind of synchronized move that usually means a rates read-through rather than company news.
  • Aerospace and defense cracked as well. RTX and Honeywell led, and Textron hit a fresh 52-week low the same day Citigroup cut its target to $86, more profit-taking in a crowded trade than a fundamental break.
  • Fear & Greed reads 44.6 (fear), but that's almost entirely stock price strength and breadth cratering (both "extreme fear") while momentum and junk-bond demand still sit in greed. Looks like sector rotation out of cyclicals, not a market-wide panic.

Price strength and breadth both sit in extreme fear while VIX stays neutral, matching the industrials-and-REITs-only pattern in the mover list rather than a broad risk-off. No crypto driver line today: Bitcoin and Ethereum both fell overnight but neither cleared the 2-sigma bar.

Mostly REITs and aerospace/defense names, with a couple of Macau-exposed travel names (LVS, WYNN) mixed in.

Claude Haiku 5.5

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on Oct 7, its cheapest and fastest small model yet, cutting prices roughly 75% versus Haiku 4.5 and adding an adjustable effort setting to trade cost for intelligence. It also halved Claude Sonnet 5.5 cache-read pricing to $0.10 per million tokens.

Meta and Microsoft pull back on internal Claude use

Both companies are steering employees away from Claude to cut costs and push their own tools: Microsoft's internal Claude spending cap reportedly dropped from $100,000 to around $10,000 per employee, and Meta's Claude Code users roughly halved to 30,000. Both say customer spending on Anthropic's models through their platforms keeps growing even as internal use shrinks.

GPT-6 and Intelligent UI

OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 across ChatGPT on Oct 7, adding "Intelligent UI" that answers with interactive charts, buttons and forms instead of just text, reaching paid tiers first and Free/Go tiers by Oct 8. The upgrade also speeds up web search responses by 44% and streams answers in real time.

OpenAI's math research push

OpenAI said its models have now contributed to 722 math research manuscripts and formal proofs, developed with an outside math-AI advisory board. It's framing the work as evidence AI can meaningfully assist frontier mathematics.
